In a March 2016 Google algorithm update, the search giant made an important change which would benefit mobile-friendly web pages and penalize those that aren't.
If your website is not mobile-friendly, you risk being down-graded in search results.
Google announced in March 2016 that they would take new measures in May of the same year which would result in non-repsonsive websites being hit even harder. Mobile-friendly websites, on the other hand, will be rewarded even more in the future.
